Staying healthy is more than just eating healthy food. We very much need to be concerned with the chemicals we ingest without our knowledge.
A clear example comes to us from a recent study undertaken by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health. In the study, volunteers ate a can of soup per day for five days while another group of volunteers ate fresh soup over the same period. The results showed that the urine BPA (biphenol A) levels of the first group were increased by a staggering 1,221% over the group who ate fresh soup. 
BPA, an organic compound used in the manufacture of plastics and epoxy resins, is added as a liner to the cans of food and drinks. The compound has been linked by a number of studies to infertility and higher risks of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes 2.   
The best way to ensure you reduce the ingestion of harmful chemicals is to eat organic whole foods that you prepare yourself.
